Father’s Day

Fathers – We Thank God for You

WELCOME – we will be using the BLUE HYMNAL today.

HYMN 633 “Speak, O Lord” please stand for the last stanza

THE SERVICE – Setting Two - page 172ff

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

O God, because your abiding presence always goes with us, keep us aware of your  daily mercies that we may live secure and content in your eternal love; through your  Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,  now and forever. Amen

FIRST LESSON: Deuteronomy 6:3-9

The LORD commands parents, especially fathers, to teach their children God’s commands and  blessings.

3Listen, O Israel, and be conscientious about doing those things, so it may go  well for you and so you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and  honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4 Hear, O  Israel! The LORD is our God. The LORD is one! 5Love the LORD your God with  all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 These words that  I am commanding you today are to be on your heart. 7 Teach them diligently to  your children, and speak about them when you sit in your house and when you  walk on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as a sign  on your wrists, and they will serve as symbols on your forehead. 9Write them  on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.

P: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 89 (verses spoken responsively)

Forever I will sing the good-ness of the LORD, the good-ness of the LORD.

SECOND LESSON: Colossians 1:3-6

Paul thanks God for those growing in their faith and demonstrating it.

3We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for  you, 4because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you  have for all the saints 5because of the hope that is stored up for you in heaven.  You have already heard about this in the word of truth, the gospel 6that is  present with you now. The gospel is bearing fruit and growing in the entire  world, just as it also has been doing among you from the day you heard it and  came to know the grace of God in truth.

P: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

P: Alleluia. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same  attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had. Alleluia.

GOD’S WORD GOSPEL ACCLAMATION – sung (page 179) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Your words – are – my – joy

And my – heart’s – de – light.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL: Matthew 7:7-14

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus instructs his followers to live confident lives for him.

7“Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep  knocking, and it will be opened for you. 8For everyone who asks receives, and  everyone who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, it will be opened. 9Who  among you, if his son asks him for bread, would give him a stone? 10 Or who, if  his son asks for a fish, would give him a snake? 11 Then if you know how to give  good gifts to your children, even though you are evil, how much more will your  Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12 So do for others  whatever you want people to do for you, because this is the Law and the  Prophets. 13Enter through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the  way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter through it. 14 How  narrow is the gate, and how difficult is the way that leads to life, and there are  few who find it.

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ.
