PRAYER OF THE DAY:  

Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and our  ears to hear. Help us to believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and do the things that  are pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you  and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 6:1-8 

Isaiah admitted he was sinfully unclean, unqualified to stand in God’s presence. The LORD not only takes  Isaiah’s sin away but also sends Isaiah out as a messenger of grace. 

1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted,  and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had  six wings. With two they covered their faces. With two they covered their feet. With  two they flew. 3 One called to another and said, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies! 

The whole earth is full of his glory!” 4 The foundations of the thresholds shook at the  voice of the one who called, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 Then I said, “I am  doomed! I am ruined, because I am a man with unclean lips, and I dwell among a people  with unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Armies!” 6 Then  one of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken  from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with the coal and said, “Look, this has  touched your lips, so your guilt is taken away, and your sin is forgiven.” 8 Then I heard the  Lord’s voice, saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am.  Send me!”

I will hear what the Lord proclaims: peace to his people. 

SECOND LESSON: Romans 10:12-17 

God’s plan is to equip saved sinners like us to proclaim salvation to other sinners. St. Paul explains that  God has no backup plan. 

12 So there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all,  who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 Yes, “Everyone who calls on the name of  the Lord will be saved.” 14 So then, how can they call on the one they have not believed  in? And how can they believe in the one about whom they have not heard? And how can  they hear without a preacher? 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? Just as it  is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news of peace, who  preach the gospel of good things!” 16 But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord,  who believed our message?”17 So then, faith comes from hearing the message, and the  message comes through the word of Christ.

GOSPEL: Luke 5:1-11 

Jesus takes simple, self-admittedly sinful fishermen, seemingly unqualified for gospel ministry. He removes  their fears, calls them to follow, and makes them fishers of men. 

1 One time, while the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God,  he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats there along the lakeshore.  The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3Jesus got into one of the boats,  which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the shore. He sat down  and began teaching the crowds from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said  to Simon, “Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch.” 5Simon  answered him, “Master, we worked hard all through the night and caught nothing. But at  your word I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they caught a great  number of fish, and their nets were about to tear apart. 7 They signaled their partners in  the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they  began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away  from me, because I am a sinful man, Lord.” 9For Peter and all those with him were amazed  at the number of fish they had caught, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee,  who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Have no fear. From now on you will  be catching people.” 11 After they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

Lord God, you know that we are surrounded by many dangers and that we often stumble and  fall. Strengthen us in body and mind, and bring us safely through all temptations; through  Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,  now and forever. FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 1:4-10 

The LORD called Jeremiah to fearlessly share God’s Word, even if what he said made him unpopular. 

4 The word of the LORD came to me. 5 Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I set you apart. I appointed you to be a prophet to the  nations. 6 But I said, “Ah, LORD God! I really do not know how to speak! SECOND LESSON: 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5 

A temptation is for spiritual teachers to say only what people want to hear, equating personal popularity  with success. St. Paul gives young Pastor Timothy a different agenda. 

14 As for you, continue in the things you have learned and about which you have  become convinced. You know from whom you learned them 15 and that from infancy  you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation  through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God breath-ed and is useful for teaching,  for rebuking, for correcting, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of  God may be complete, well equipped for every good work. 41I solemnly charge you  in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead,  and in view of his appearing and his kingdom: 2Preach the word. Be ready whether it  is convenient or not. Correct, rebuke, and encourage, with all patience and  teaching.3For there will come a time when people will not put up with sound doctrine.  Instead, because they have itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers  in line with their own desires. 4 They will also turn their ears away from the truth and  will turn aside to myths. 5 As for you, keep a clear head in every situation. Bear  hardship. Do the work of an evangelist. Fulfill your ministry.

Jesus was popular in Capernaum. The people wanted him to stay there permanently. Jesus knew for his  mission to be successful, he needed to proclaim the good news in other towns. 

38 Jesus got up, left the synagogue, and went into Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law  was suffering from a high fever. They asked him to help her. 39 He stood over her,  rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them. 40 As  the sun was setting, they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases. He  laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 Demons also came out of many  people, crying out, “You are the Son of God!” He rebuked them and did not allow  them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 42When it was day, he went  out to a deserted place. The crowds were looking for him. They went up to him and  were trying to prevent him from leaving them. 43 But he told them, “I must preach the  good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is why I was  sent.” 44 And he continued to preach in the synagogues in the land of the Jews.

GOSPEL: Luke 4:16-30 

In one of Jesus’ first sermons, delivered in his hometown, people took offense at his words and ultimately  rejected him. 

16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he  went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of  the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is  written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim  good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and  recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of  the Lord’s favor.” 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat  down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by  saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 All spoke well of  him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s  son?” they asked. 23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me:  ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we  have heard that you did in Capernaum.’” 24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 I assure you that there were many widows in  Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was  a severe famine throughout the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to  a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel with  leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only  Naaman the Syrian.” 28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard  this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill  on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right  through the crowd and went on his way.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:  

Almighty God, you gave your one and only Son to be the light of the world. Grant that your people,  illumined by your Word and sacra-ments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he  may be known, worshiped, and believed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord,  who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 62:1-5 

The prophet Isaiah pictures the Church’s relationship with the Lord as an infinitely happy marriage. As  our bridegroom, Christ delivers more than that for which we ask. 

1For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her  vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. 2 The nations will  see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the  mouth of the Lord will bestow. 3 You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord’s hand, a  royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 No longer will they call you Deserted, or name  your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for  the Lord will take delight in you, and your land will be married. 5 As a young man marries  a young woman, so will your Builder marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you.

SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 3:14-21 

St. Paul teaches that God wants us to have a life that is fuller than we could possibly imagine. 

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on  earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your  hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have  power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and  deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you  may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do  immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work  within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations,  for ever and ever! To spare a newlywed couple embarrassment from having run out of wine, Mary asks Jesus to do  something. Jesus delivers more than his mother asks, turning water into the choicest of wine. 

1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2and  Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone,  Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4“Woman, why do you involve  me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do  whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for  ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to the  servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told  them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9and  the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not  realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.  Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine  first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have  saved the best till now.” 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the  signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

David was the youngest of eight brothers and a shepherd. Yet, at his anointing, the Lord declared his true  identity—future king of Israel. 

1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him  as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of  Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” 2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If  Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have  come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to  do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.” 4Samuel did what the Lord said. When  he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked,  “Do you come in peace?” 5Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to  the Lord. Conse-crate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he  consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they arrived,  Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the  outward appear-ance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and  had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one  either.” 9Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen  this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him,  “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send  for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent for him and had him brought  in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then  the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and  anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of  the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

SECOND LESSON: Titus 3:4-7 

In the eyes of the world, baptism appears to be just a religious ceremony. St. Paul explains baptism is  so much more—a second birth that gives you the identity of God’s child and heir. 

4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because  of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the  washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on  us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, having been justified by his  grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

People wondered if John the Baptist was the Messiah. He was a powerful preacher who lived a unique  life. But at his baptism, Jesus was identified by his Father as the Anointed One. 

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if  John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing  fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but  he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 21 When all the people were being  baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the  Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven:  “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

FIRST LESSON: 1 Kings 10:1-9 

An African queen visits Israel to test the wisdom of King Solomon. The result of her visit: she ends up  praising the LORD for his love. The gift of God is for all people. 

1 When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to  the LORD, she came to test Solomon with hard questions. 2 Arriving at Jerusalem with  a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and  precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on  her mind. 3Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to  explain to her. 4 When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the  palace he had built, 5the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending  servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at the temple  of the Lord, she was overwhelmed. 6She said to the king, “The report I heard in my  own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. 7 But I did not  believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was  told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. 8 How happy  your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and  hear your wisdom! 9Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship  him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the  law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they  replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land  of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah for out of you will come a  ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and  found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to  Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him,  report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king,  they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they  were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary,  and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and  presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in  a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 50:4-9 

The Servant of the LORD spoke through the prophet Isaiah. As our substitute Jesus demonstrated perfect  obedience and trust, even when his Father asked him to be the sacrifice for our sin.

Through his suffering and sacrifice, Jesus has made us holy. He now calls us his brothers and sisters.

The lowly little town of Bethlehem would be lifted up. There a special son would be born who would bring  spiritual peace to the ends of the earth.

We could not possibly raise ourselves up to God. So, the Son of God obeyed the law for us and by his  sacrifice has made us holy. Christ has lifted up the lowly. 5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did  not desire, but a body you prepared for me; 6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, my God.’” 8First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt  offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”— though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I  have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by  that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ  once for all.

FIRST LESSON: Malachi 3:1-7b 

Through God’s Word and the messengers who proclaim it, the Lord encourages his people to return to  him in humble repentance. 

1“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the  Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom  you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty. 2 But who can endure the day of his  coming? Who can stand when he appears? John the Baptist prepared people to meet their Savior by preaching a message of repentance and  forgiveness. 

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was  governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and  Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2during the high-priesthood of Annas  and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He  went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for  the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight  paths for him. 5Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The  crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. 6 And all people will see  God’s salvation.’”

Christ the King Sunday

Thankful Throughout the Year 

Charles Dickens said that we are somewhat mixed up here in America. Instead of having  just one Thanksgiving Day each year, we should have 364. We can live free of the fear of God’s judgment because of the sacrifice our high priest made.

FIRST LESSON: 1 Kings 17:8-16 

A widow generously offers up the last bit of food she has to serve the prophet Elijah. 

8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9“Go at once to Zarephath in the region  of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” 10 So  he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering  sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may  have a drink?” 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece  of bread.” 12 “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any  bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. But first  make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then  make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of  Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until  the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’” 15 She went away and did as Elijah had told  her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the  word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.

The believers in Macedonia demonstrate startling generosity in collecting an offering to help fellow  Christians in need. 

1And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has  given the Macedonian churches. 2In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing  joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they  gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their  own, 4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the  Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all  to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 6So we urged Titus, just as he had  earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your  part. 7 But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete  earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this  grace of giving.

Jesus points to a poor widow as an example of startling generosity. 

38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk  around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have  the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These  men will be punished most severely.” 41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the  offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple  treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put  in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to him,  Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all  the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in  everything—all she had to live on.”

St. John sees those who had been killed because of their faith in Christ now living and reigning with him  in glory. 

1 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or  Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked  and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand  years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time. 4I saw thrones on  which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of  those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the  word of God. They[a]had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its  mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a  thousand years. 5(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were  ended.) This is the first resurrect-tion. 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first  resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God  and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

M: I rejoiced with those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord."  C: One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell  in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the  beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.  

M: Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place?  C: He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up  his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.  

M: The Lord looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any  who understand, any who seek God. All have turned aside, they have together  become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.

Red Heart

4. Blue Sky  

 “This rose, moreover, is fixed in a sky-colored background to show  that such joy of faith in the spirit is but a promise and beginning of   heavenly joy to come. This joy, though not yet revealed, is looked   forward to and held by the hope which we have.” 

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us get rid  of every burden and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with patient  endurance the race that is laid out for us. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is  the author of our faith and the one who brings it to its goal. In view of the joy set  before him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat  at the right hand of God’s throne.

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid  again. In his joy, he goes away and sells all that he has and buys that field.  Matthew 13:44

CONFESSION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED As explained by Martin Luther in his Small Catechism 

I believe that God created me and all that exists, and that he gave  me my body and soul, eyes, ears and all my members, my mind and  all my abilities. And I believe that God still preserves me by richly  and daily providing clothing and shoes, food and drink, property and  home, spouse and children, land, cattle and all I own, and all that I  need to keep my body and life. God also preserves me by defending  me against all danger, guarding and protecting me from all evil. All  this God does only because he is my good and merciful Father in  heaven, and not because I have earned or deserve it. For all this I  ought to thank and praise, to serve and obey him. This is most  certainly true. 

I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from  eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord. He  has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and  won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil,  not with gold or silver, but with his holy, precious blood and with his  innocent suffering and death. All this he did that I should be his own,  and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting  righteousness, innocence and blessedness,  

I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in  Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has  called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and  kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers,  enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and  keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian  church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers. On  the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life  to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. 

PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER 

M: Lord, our refuge and strength, we gather to worship and praise you for your  ongoing work of reformation in your Church. 

C: Lord, to you alone be glory. 

M: God of grace, in unfathomable love you pitied us sinners and sent your Son as  our substitute to deliver us from sin, guilt, death, darkness, and despair. C: For your grace, Lord, to you alone be glory. 

M: By your grace you sent your Spirit to call us to repentance. Your powerful gospel  rescued us from rebellion and fills us with faith in you, the true and living God. C: For saving faith, Lord, to you alone be glory. 

M: By your grace we are heirs of your eternal Word and trustees of the inspired  Scriptures, through which you proclaim your saving truth to every generation. By  the Scriptures you overthrew the darkness of those who perverted your teachings  and restored to your church the message of salvation by grace alone. 

C: For the Holy Scriptures, Lord, to you alone be glory.

M: In these last days, Lord Jesus Christ, protect your little flock. We are like sheep  living among fierce wolves. Satan stalks us like a roaring lion. Defend us from  false teachers who twist your Word to satisfy the latest longing. 

C: For wisdom and watchfulness under attack, hear our prayer, O  Lord. 

M: Never in the history of the world has your Holy Word been so accessible. We  lack only the zeal to treasure your restored truth with lives of faithful Bible study. C: For the noble character to search the Scriptures daily, hear our  prayer, O Lord. 

M: As we celebrate the Reformation that restored your pure gospel to your Church,  we also celebrate our common confession of the pure gospel in Word and  sacrament. 

C: For this unity of faith, we give you thanks, O Lord. 

M: We remember the faithful confessors of this and former generations, who have  passed down to us your Word of Truth.C: For these faithful servants, we give you thanks, O Lord.

FIRST LESSON: 2 Kings 5:14-27 

The prophet Elisha’s servant, Gehazi, prioritized riches over God. 

14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told  him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy. 15 Then Naaman  and all his attendants went back to the man of God. He stood before him and said, “Now I  know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your  servant.” 16 The prophet answered, “As surely as the LORD lives, whom I serve, I will not  accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused. 17 “If you will not,” said  Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth as a pair of mules can carry,  for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but  the LORD.18 But may the LORD forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master  enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning on my arm and I have to bow  there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the LORD forgive your servant  for this.” 19 “Go in peace,” Elisha said. After Naaman had traveled some distance, 20 Gehazi,  the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman,  this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will  run after him and get something from him.” 21 So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When  Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is  everything all right?” he asked. 22 “Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent  me to say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from  the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’” 23 “By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up  the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his  servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24When Gehazi came to the hill, he took  the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they  left. 25When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you  been, Gehazi?” “Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered. 26 But Elisha said to him,  “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this  the time to take money or to accept clothes—or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and  herds, or male and female slaves? 27 Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your  descendants forever.” Then Gehazi went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous—it  had become as white as snow.

SECOND LESSON: Hebrews 4:12,13 

God’s Word is like a sword. It cuts through our pretentions and pride and exposes our true priorities. 

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it  penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and  attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is  uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Jesus helps a young man see a problem deeper than his failure to keep God’s law perfectly—that he  prioritized his wealth above the call to follow Christ. 

17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good  teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me  good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the  commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal,  you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”  20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” 21 Jesus looked at him and  loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the  poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22At this the man’s face  fell. Taking one of the stones there, he put  it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway  resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were  ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am  the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and  your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the  dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north  and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back  to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 When  Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not  aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other  than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 4:17-28 

Paul urges us to put off the sinful flesh and put on the new-self found in Christ’s forgiveness 

17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the  Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their  understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in  them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given  themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are  full of greed. 20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard  about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You  were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is  being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your  minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and  holiness. 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your  neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not  let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a  foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing  something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with  those in need.

Jesus forgives the paralytic and shows his divine authority to by healing him 

1Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2Some men  brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to  the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” 3 At this, some of the teachers of  the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!” 4 Knowing their  thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is  easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the  paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised  God, who had given such authority to man.
