April 9, 2023 - The Resurrection of our LORD

Prayer Before Worship: Read Hymn 161:1

Hymn 153

Invitation to Celebrate

John 11:25  "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; {26} and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

Rev 1:17-18  "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. {18} I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive forever and ever!

Rom 1:4  Jesus Christ our Lord was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead.

Rom 6:45  We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the  dead  through

the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.

Phil 3:10-11  I want to know Christ & the power of his resurrection & the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, {11} and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Rom 8:11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

1 Pet 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, {4} and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you.

Hymn 150:1

Prayer: Almighty God,/ by the glorious resurrection of Your Son Jesus  Christ,/ You conquered death & opened the gate to eternal life.  Grant that we, who have been raised with Him through baptism,/ may walk in newness of life,/ & ever rejoice in the hope of sharing His glory; /through Jesus Christ our Lord, who, with You & the Holy Sprit be dominion & praise now & forever.    (Sing) Amen.

Old Testament Lesson: Job 19:23-27

Because Jesus lives, we too will be raised to live with Him

23 ““Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, 24 that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever! 25 I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. 26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; 27 I myself will see him with my own eyes——I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

Hymn 150:2

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 15:51-57

Jesus conquered death for us.  We will be raised to live  forever.

51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: ““Death has been swallowed up in victory.””55 ““Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?””56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hymn 150:3

Gospel: Matthew 28:1-10

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.  4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.  The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” :8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Hymn 150: 4

Confession of faith: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God,/ begotten of the Father from eternity,/ & also true man, born of the Virgin Mary,/ is my Lord.  He has redeemed me, a lost & condemned creature,/ purchased & won me from all sins, from death & from the power of the devil,/ not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood & with His innocent suffering & death.  All this He did that I should be His own, & live under Him in His kingdom, / & serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence & blessedness,/ just as He has risen from death lives & rules eternally.  This is most certainly true.
