May the holy LORD God bless your worship and encourage you with his Word and Sacrament.

WELCOME

HYMN 431 (1-5) “I Walk in Danger All the Way”

– please stand for last stanza

COMMON SERVICE - pages 15-17

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see  and our ears to hear. Help us to believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and  do the things that are pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord,  who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 40:27-31

When the devil’s temptations make us tired and accusations make us weary, the LORD promises to  renew our strength.

27Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from  the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you  not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the  earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even  youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who  hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Peter 5:6-11

Our enemy the devil may stalk us like a hungry lion hunting prey, but the God of all grace cares for us  and promises deliverance.

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you  up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert  and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring  lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the  faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is  undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10And the God of all grace, who called  you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will  himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the  power for ever and ever. Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in  darkness, but will have the light of life.” Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL: Mark 1:29-39

The devil loves to see God’s children suffer. Jesus undoes the devil’s work.

29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the  home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever,  and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand  and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 32 That  evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many  who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not  let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35 Very early in the  morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a  solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for  him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”  38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can  preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout  Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
