Epiphany 1 (Baptism of Jesus)

BAPTISM IS THE CURE FOR AN IDENTITY CRISIS

WELCOME

HYMN 89 “To Jordan’s River Came Our Lord”

(Please stand for the last verse)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved  Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our  calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus  Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  (Sung) Amen

FIRST LESSON: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

David was the youngest of eight brothers and a shepherd. Yet, at his anointing, the Lord declared his true  identity—future king of Israel.

1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him  as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of  Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” 2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If  Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have  come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to  do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.” 4Samuel did what the Lord said. When  he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked,  “Do you come in peace?” 5Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to  the Lord. Conse-crate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he  consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they arrived,  Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the  outward appear-ance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and  had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one  either.” 9Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen  this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him,  “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send  for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent for him and had him brought  in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then  the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and  anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of  the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

Great are the works of the LORD. Alleluia!

SECOND LESSON: Titus 3:4-7

In the eyes of the world, baptism appears to be just a religious ceremony. St. Paul explains baptism is  so much more—a second birth that gives you the identity of God’s child and heir.

4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because  of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the  washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on  us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, having been justified by his  grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Alleluia.

(Sung) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

These words are written that we may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL: Luke 3:15-17,21-22

People wondered if John the Baptist was the Messiah. He was a powerful preacher who lived a unique  life. But at his baptism, Jesus was identified by his Father as the Anointed One.

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if  John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing  fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but  he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 21 When all the people were being  baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the  Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven:  “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
