SENT WITH GOD’S OWN AUTHORITY

WELCOME

HYMN 546 “Lord Jesus, You Have Come”

(please stand for last stanza)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Almighty God, we thank you for planting in us the seed of your Word. By your Holy  Spirit help us to receive it with joy and to bring forth fruits in faith and hope and love;  through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy  Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Sung) Amen

FIRST LESSON: Amos 7:10-15

Wicked Amaziah questions the prophet’s right to rebuke the king. Amos explains that he has authority  only because the LORD told him to speak on God’s behalf.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel:  “Amos is raising a conspi-racy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land  cannot bear all his words. 11 For this is what Amos is saying: “‘Jeroboam will die  by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.’”  12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah.  Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy  anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the  kingdom.” 14Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of  a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But  the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my  people Israel.’

C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 78 – page 95

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

SECOND LESSON: Titus 1:5-9

St. Paul establishes qualifications for those who serve in public ministry and stresses that their authority  comes from holding firmly to God’s Word.

5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left  unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must  be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open  to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7Since an overseer manages God’s  house-hold, he must be blameless —not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not  given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. 8 Rather, he  must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright,  holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has  been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute  those who oppose it.

P: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. The Word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.  Alleluia.

 (Sung) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

These words are written that we may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL: Mark 6:7-13

Before Jesus sends the Twelve out to do ministry, he gives them his authority.

7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave  them authority over impure spirits. 8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing  for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9Wear  sandals but not an extra shirt. 10Whenever you enter a house, stay there until  you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you,  leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out  many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

C: (sung) Praise be to you, O Christ!
