November 17, 2024 Last Judgment

LIVE FREE FROM THE FEAR OF JUDGMENT

WELCOME

HYMN 29 “Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending”

 (Stand for the last verse)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may  always look forward to the end of this present evil age and the day of your righteous judgment.  Keep us steadfast in true and living faith, and present us at last holy and blameless before  you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,  one God, now and forever. (Sung) Amen

FIRST LESSON: Daniel 12:1-3

The prophet Daniel foretells that the world will get worse and then judgment day will come. All whose  names are written by Christ in his book of life need not fear that judgment.

1“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There  will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until  then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the  book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will  awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those  who are wise[a] will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many  to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

P: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 16 – page 89

I will walk in the presence of the LORD, in the land of the living.

SECOND LESSON: Hebrews 9:24-28

We can live free of the fear of God’s judgment because of the sacrifice our high priest made.

24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy  of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s  presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high  priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his  own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of  the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away  with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after  that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many;  and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who  are waiting for him.

P: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.  Alleluia.

(Sung) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

These words are written that we may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL: John 5:25-29

God the Father has given Jesus Christ the authority to judge.

25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the  voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in  himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him  authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this, for a  time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out— those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is  evil will rise to be condemned.”

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: (sung) Praise be to you, O Christ!
