Rethinking Devoted Commitment

WELCOME

HYMN 122 “Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle”

Please stand for the last stanza.

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Eternal God and Father, help us to remember Jesus, who obeyed your will and bore the cross for our  salvation that through his anguish, pain, and death we may receive forgiveness of sins and inherit  eternal life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,  one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 43:1-7

In devoted commitment the LORD promises his people that even if they need to pass through raging waters or  walk through a wall of fire, he will be right there with them.

1 But now, this is what the LORD says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2When  you pass through the waters, I will be with you;and when you pass through the rivers, they  will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames  will not set you ablaze. 3For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I  give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. 4Since you are precious and  honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in  exchange for your life. 5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from  the east and gather you from the west. 6I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the

south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of  the earth— 7everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I  formed and made.”

SECOND LESSON: Hebrews 5:7-9

Because he was truly human Jesus did not relish having to suffer for our salvation. Yet he submitted to the cross  out of his devoted commitment to us.

7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries  and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his  reverent submission. 8Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9and,  once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. The Alleluia response is omitted during Lent

GOSPEL: John 12:20-33

Though the thought of the cross troubled his soul, Jesus was committed to glorifying his Father’s name by  winning eternal life for us.

20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They  came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would  like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. 23 Jesus  replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a  kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces  many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this  world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my  servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. 27 “Now my soul is  troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I  came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified  it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others  said an angel had spoken to him. 30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. 31 Now  is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32 And I,  when I am lifted up[g]from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show the  kind of death he was going to die.

Rethinking the Solution to Sin

WELCOME

HYMN 108 “Jesus, Refuge of the Weary”

 (stand for last stanza)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

M: Almighty God, we confess that we deserve to be punished for our evil deeds. But we ask you  graciously to cleanse us from all sin and to comfort us with your salvation; through your Son, Jesus  Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: (Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Numbers 21:4-9

The LORD promised a solution for the bite of venomous snakes. That solution perhaps seemed nonsensical. Yet, all those  who trusted God’s promise lived

4 They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people  grew impatient on the way; 5they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you  brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we  detest this miserable food!” 6 Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the  people and many Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke  against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses  prayed for the people. 8 The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone  who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then  when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 2:1-10

God’s solution to sin is offered by grace and received through faith.

1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when  you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who  is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one  time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is  rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is  by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in  the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages he might show the  incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by  grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of  God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in  Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall  not perish but have eternal life.

The Alleluia response is omitted during Lent

GOSPEL: John 3:14-21

Christ is the solution to sin. Whoever believes in Christ shall not perish but have eternal life.

14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that  everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his  one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did  not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through  him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned  already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict:  Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were  evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their  deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen  plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

Rethinking the Worth of Worship

May the LORD bless your worship.

WELCOME

HYMN 255 “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty”

– please stand for last stanza

SERVICE OF WORD & SACRAMENT - page 26

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Almighty God, look with favor on your humble servants and stretch out the right hand  of your power to defend us against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ, your Son,  our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  (Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Exodus 20:1-17

The Ten Commandments teach us that God is to be worshiped above all. Why? He is the God who  brought us out of slavery

1 And God spoke all these words: 2“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of  Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3“You shall have no other gods before[a] me. 4“You  shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the  earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or  worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for  the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but  showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7“You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not  hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.8“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping  it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a  sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor  your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and  the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore  the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your  mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 13 “You  shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You  shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your  neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female  servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

Whatever it is you trust most, that is what you truly worship. Some worship intelligence. Others worship  power. May we worship Christ for what he did on the cross.

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us  who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “I will destroy the  wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 20Where is the  wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this  age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom  of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through  the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand  signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling  block to Jews and foolishness to Gen-tiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both  Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the  foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger  than human strength.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,  that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

Alleluia is omitted during Lent

GOSPEL: John 2:13-22

Jesus restores his Father’s house to what it was supposed to be: a place of worship for all people.

13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In  the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting  at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the  temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers  and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of  here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that  it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 The Jews then responded to  him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” 19 Jesus  answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 They  replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised  from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the  scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

February 25, 2024 Lent 2

May God bless your worship as we rethink suffering under the cross.

HYMN 434 “Lord, You I Love with All My Heart”

 (stand for last stanza)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

M: Almighty God, you see that we have no power to defend ourselves. Guard and keep us both  outwardly and inwardly from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts  that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you  and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: (Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Job 1:13-22

Job is given a heavy cross, but it does not crush his faith. Instead, God uses Job’s cross to move Job to  worship and praise the LORD.

13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest  brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the  donkeys were grazing nearby, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They  put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

16While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell  from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who  has escaped to tell you!” 17While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said,  “The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made  off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped  to tell you!” 18While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your  sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when  suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house.

It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell  you!” 20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the  ground in worship 21 and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will  depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be  praised.” 22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 5:1-11

St. Paul teaches that God works through our suffering to shape our Christian character and to lead us to  cling to Christ’s gracious promises.

12 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through  our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in  which we now stand. And we[b]boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but  we[c]also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces  perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us  to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy  Spirit, who has been given to us. 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still  powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous  person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God  demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from  God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to  him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be  saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord  Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Jesus humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Alleluias are omitted during Lent

GOSPEL: Mark 8:31-38

Jesus teaches of the absolute necessity of the cross, both his and ours.

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be  rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be  killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him  aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he  rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns  of God, but merely human concerns.” 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his  disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up  their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever  loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for someone to  gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for  their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful  generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

February 18, 2024 Lent 1 Rethinking Trials, Tests, and Temptations

WELCOME

HYMN 420 “God Moves in a Mysterious Way”

 (Please stand for last stanza)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his  deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore  us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and  forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Genesis 22:1-18

God gives Abraham a test which will demonstrate who Abraham loves and trusts most.

1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2Then God  said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice  him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” 3Early the next morning Abraham got up  and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough  wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4On the third day Abraham  looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while  I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham took the  wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife.  As the two of them went on together, 7Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” Yes,  my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb f or the  burnt offering?” 8Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”  And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about,  Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the  altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the  angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do  not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because  you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket  he saw a r am caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering  instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On  the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven

a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and  have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as  numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession  of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because  you have obeyed me.”

SECOND LESSON: Romans 8:31-39

The proof of God’s love is not that he removes all our trouble. The proof of God’s love is that he gave us his Son. If he  did that, nothing can separate us from God’s love.

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He  who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him,  graciously give us all things? 33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God  who justifies. 34Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that,  who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate  us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger  or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to  be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the  future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to  separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

It is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” NOTE: During Lent the Alleluia response is  not sung.

GOSPEL: Mark 1:12-15

Sometimes we fail to stand firm in trial or temptation. But by grace the kingdom of God is still ours because Jesus, as our  substitute, perfectly overcame all of Satan’s temptations.

12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13and he was in the wilderness forty days, being  tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.14After John was put in prison,  Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15“The time has come,” he said. “The  kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

February 11, 2024 Transfiguration Sunday

“A Glimpse of His Glory”

WELCOME

HYMN 95 “How Good, Lord, to be Here”

 (Please stand for last stanza)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

O God, in the glorious transfiguration of your only-begotten Son, you confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the  testimony of Moses and Elijah, and in the voice that came from the bright cloud, you foreshadowed our adoption as  your sons. In your mercy, make us co-heirs of glory with Jesus our King, and bring us at last to heaven; through your  Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: 2 Kings 2:1-12a

The prophet Elijah never tasted death but instead was taken directly to heaven. On the Mount of Transfiguration Elijah  appeared with the glorious Son of God who would taste death.

1When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way  from Gilgal. 2Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; the LORD has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As surely as  the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 3The company of the  prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, “Do you know that the LORD is going to take your master  from you today?” “Yes, I know,” Elisha replied, “so be quiet.” 4Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, Elisha; the  LORD has sent me to Jericho.” And he replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave  you.” So they went to Jericho. 5The company of the prophets at Jericho went up to Elisha and asked him,  “Do you know that the LORD is going to take your master from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he replied, “so  be quiet.” 6Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; the LORD has sent me to the Jordan.” And he replied, “As  surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them walked on. 7Fifty men from  the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had  stopped at the Jordan. 8Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to  the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. 9When they had crossed, Elijah  said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion  of your spirit,” Elisha replied. 10“You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am  taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” 11As they were walking along and talking together,  suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to  heaven in a whirlwind. 12Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of  Israel!”

P: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND LESSON: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6

We cannot yet physically see what those disciples saw on the Mount of Transfiguration. But St. Paul teaches we can still  see the glory of Christ’s light in the gospel.

3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4The god of this age has blinded the  minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is  the image of God. 5For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your  servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our  hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

P: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. A cloud covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love.  Listen to him!” Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia.....page 40

GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-9

Jesus gives Peter, James, and John a glimpse of his true glory.

2After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were  all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in  the world could bleach them. 4And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with  Jesus. 5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one  for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6(He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7Then a cloud  appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”  8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9As they were  coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of  Man had risen from the dead.

WELCOME

HYMN 431 (1-5) “I Walk in Danger All the Way”

– please stand for last stanza

COMMON SERVICE - pages 15-17

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see  and our ears to hear. Help us to believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and  do the things that are pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord,  who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 40:27-31

When the devil’s temptations make us tired and accusations make us weary, the LORD promises to  renew our strength.

27Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from  the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you  not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the  earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even  youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who  hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Peter 5:6-11

Our enemy the devil may stalk us like a hungry lion hunting prey, but the God of all grace cares for us  and promises deliverance.

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you  up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert  and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring  lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the  faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is  undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10And the God of all grace, who called  you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will  himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the  power for ever and ever. Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in  darkness, but will have the light of life.” Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL: Mark 1:29-39

The devil loves to see God’s children suffer. Jesus undoes the devil’s work.

29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the  home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever,  and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand  and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 32 That  evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many  who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not  let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35 Very early in the  morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a  solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for  him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”  38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can  preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout  Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

May God bless your worship as see once again  that Jesus has absolute authority.

WELCOME

HYMN 353 “Praise the One

Who Breaks the Darkness” (stand for last stanza)

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Almighty and everlasting God, look with mercy on our weaknesses,  and in all our dangers and needs stretch out the right hand of your  majesty to help and defend us; through your Son, Jesus Christ our  Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,  now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Moses prophesies that the LORD would raise up another prophet who would  speak with all the authority of God himself.

15The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me  from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen  to him. 16For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at  Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not

hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire  anymore, or we will die.” 17The LORD said to me: “What they  say is good. 18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from  among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his  mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19I myself  will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words  that the prophet speaks in my name. 20But a prophet who  presumes to speak in my name anything I have not  commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other  gods, is to be put to death.”

SECOND LESSON: Hebrews 3:1-6

As great as Moses was, Jesus is worthy of infinitely greater honor. For only  Jesus has absolute authority.

1Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the  heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we  acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2He was faithful  to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in  all God’s house. 3Jesus has been found worthy of greater  honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater  honor than the house itself. 4For every house is built by  someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5“Moses was  faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to  what would be spoken by God in the future. 6But Christ is  faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house,  if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in  which we glory.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he  taught them as one who had authority. Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia.....page 40

GOSPEL: Mark 1:21-28

Jesus demonstrates absolute authority. Even his enemies, the demons, have  to obey him.

21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus  went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were  amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had  authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their  synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,  24“What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come  to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25“Be  quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26The impure spirit  shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27The  people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is  this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders  to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28News about him spread  quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

WELCOME

HYMN 570 “O Christians, Haste” (stand for last stanza) SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Almighty God, you sent your Son to proclaim your kingdom and  teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of your Spirit that  we too may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the  brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through your  Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the  Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Jonah 3:1-5,10

The reluctant Jonah had been given the lofty charge of proclaiming a  message from the LORD to the people of Nineveh.

1Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second  time: 2“Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the  message I give you.” 3Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and

went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took  three days to go through it. 4Jonah began by going a day’s  journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and  Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5The Ninevites believed God. A  fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the  least, put on sackcloth.

10When God saw what they did and how they turned from  their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the  destruction he had threatened.

SECOND LESSON: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 Christ has committed to us, as his ambassadors, the message of recon ciliation.

14For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that  one died for all, and therefore all died. 15And he died for all,  that those who live should no longer live for themselves but  for him who died for them and was raised again. 16So from  now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view.  Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no  longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation  has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18All this is from  God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us  the ministry of reconciliation: 19that God was reconciling the  world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against  them. And he has committed to us the message of  reconciliation. 20We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as  though God were making his appeal through us. We implore  you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21God made him  who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might  become the righteousness of God.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I  will praise you. Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia.....page 40

GOSPEL: Luke 5:1-11

When Jesus gave Simon and the others the lofty charge of fishing for  people, they left everything else behind.

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the  people were crowding around him and listening to the word of  God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the  fishermen, who were washing their nets.3 He got into one of the  boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a  little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from  the boat.4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put  out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”5Simon  answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t  caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish  that their nets began to break.7So they signaled their partners in  the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled  both boats so full that they began to sink.8 When Simon Peter  saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord;  I am a sinful man!”9For he and all his companions were  astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,10 and so were  James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then  Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish  for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left  everything and followed him.

SERVICE OF THE WORD - pages 38-44

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, you proclaimed him your beloved  Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our  calling as your children, and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus  Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 49:1–6

God the Father was pleased with his Son and his mission

1Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the LORD called  me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name. 2He made my mouth like a  sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver. 3He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I  will display my splendor.” 4But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for  nothing at all. Yet what is due me is in the LORD’s hand, and my reward is with my God.” 5And now the LORD says—he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring  Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength—6he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my  servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also  make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”

PSALM 2 - page 62

Great are the works of the Lord.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 6:1-11

Jesus’ baptism is closely connected to your baptism.

1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means!  We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don’t you know  that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were  therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was  raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5For if  we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him  in a resurrection like his. 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that  the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to  sin— 7because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8Now if we died with  Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9For we know that since Christ was  raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10The  death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11In the  same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia.....page 40

GOSPEL: Mark 1:4-11

The Trinity reveals itself at the baptism of Jesus.

4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance  for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem  went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6  John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather leather belt around his waist,  and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And this was his message: “After me comes the one  more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and  untie. 8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9At that  time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10Just  as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit  descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom  I love; with you I am well pleased.”

LORD God, by the leading of a star you once made known to the nations your one and only Son. Guide us, also,  who know him now by faith, to come at last to the perfect joy of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our  Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Numbers 24:15-17a

God can use the most unexpected sources to proclaim his plan of salvation.

15Then he spoke his message:

“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,16the prophecy of  one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High who sees a vision from the  Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened: 17“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but  not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 11:13–15,28–32

Although God used his people, the Israelites, to bring into this world the Messiah/Christ, his plan included the salvation of all  the nations (Gentiles).

13I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my  ministry 14in the hope that I may somehow i my own people to envy and save some of them. 15For if  their rejection brought reconciliation to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the  dead? 28As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is  concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29for God’s gifts and his call are  irrevocable. 30Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a  result of their dis-obedience, 31so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may  now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him. Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-11

Epiphany is the often called the Christmas of the Gentiles. The Magi come to worship and present their gifts to the Gift of  the World, Jesus Christ.

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came  to Jerusalem 2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star  when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all  Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law,  he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is  what the prophet has written:

6“ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out  of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had  appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you  find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9After they had heard the king, they  went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over  the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the  house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they  opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12And having been  warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

December 31, 2023 New Year’s Eve May the holy LORD God bless your worship as you trust him in the coming New Year. WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

P: God, our Father, each day is a gift of your grace.

C: Your mercies are new every morning.

P: Guide our steps by the light of your Word.

C: Shield us from harm and keep us from evil.

P: Better than life is your love.

C: Put joy in our hearts and praise on our lips. Alleluia!

HYMN 64 “Let Us All with Gladsome Voice”

CONFESSION OF SINS

P: Dearly loved by the Lord: With faithful and trusting hearts, let us confess our sins to God our Father and  ask him to forgive us.

C: Lord God, to you I make confession. I have sinned and gone astray. Again and again  this year I have chosen my own path instead of your holy way. With my thoughts – with my words – with my actions, I have brought dishonor on your holy name and  upon myself. But in the name of my Lord Jesus Christ, and for his sake, I flee to you for mercy. Hear my cry and answer me according to your unending compassion.

ABSOLUTION

P: God, our heavenly Father has had mercy on us and has given His one and only Son to die for us. For  His sake he forgives us all our sins. Through his Holy Spirit he gives us faith to become his children and  heirs of eternal life. This is God's faithful promise. Therefore, in the name of Jesus Christ, and by his  authority, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

GLORY BE TO GOD

P: Glory be to God on high and peace to His people on earth.

Glory be to God above! Tune 63

Glory be to God the Son!

Holy Spirit, God of love,

Great Jehovah, Three in One!

Gloria in Excelsis Deo! :|:

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray….

Almighty God, you have filled us with the new light of the Word who became flesh and lived among us.  Let the light of our faith shine in all that we do; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and  reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who  meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which  yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. 4 Not so the  wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the  judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6For the LORD watches over the way of the  righteous, but the of the wicked leads to destruction.

SECOND LESSON: James 4:13-17

13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there,  carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.  What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you  ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your  arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and  doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

GOSPEL: Luke 12:13-21

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to  them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance  of possessions.” 16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an  abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I  will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years.  Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your  life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 21 “This  is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

HYMN 449 “Children of the Heavenly Father”

SERMON: 1 Corinthians 10:31

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. In the New Year Do All For the Glory of God

THANKSGIVING FOR THE VICTORY OF FAITH

P: As the year comes to a close, we take this final opportunity to remember with thanks to God those who  finished their earthly pilgrimage during this year and are now before the throne of God in heaven. Let us  remember this night before God all those who rejoice with us still – but upon a more distant shore, who live in greater light than we, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word  made flesh, who died in faith, and who now live before the throne of God and praise him each day in his  temple. We confess that we are united with them as we are united with one another in Christ.

C: Death has been swallowed up in victory! Thanks be to God!

P: When Christ, who is our life, appears,

C: Then we also will appear with him in glory.

P: We will be before the throne of God

C: And serve him day and night in his temple.

P: Never again will we hunger;

C: Never again will we thirst.

P: For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be our Shepherd; he will lead us to springs of living water. C: And God will wipe away every tear from our eyes.

RESPONSIVE PRAYER & HYMN 588

P: Lord Jesus Christ, as the old year comes to a close, we are reminded how swiftly all of life passes. We  are strangers and pilgrims in this world; our real home is with you in heaven. Help us to keep our sights  on that heavenly goal and not to become distracted by the temporary joys of this life which soon pass  away. Everything else may change and decay but you, O Lord, remain the same. Therefore, we sing:

Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide;

The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me!

P: Lord, the struggle of this life is constant. The devil, the world and our own sinful flesh are no friends to  your people. These enemies never stop trying to rob us of our faith and Christian joy. Because the danger  is so real and the fight of faith so critical, be at our side every moment of the year that lies ahead. We  do not want you to be only an occasional visitor in our homes, but a permanent and honored member  of the family. Come with your healing touch and remove the sickness of our sins. Come, Lord Jesus! Come  to stay!

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,

But as Thou dwellst with Thy disciples, Lord,

Familiar, condescending, patient, free.

Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

P: Lord Jesus, you know us better than we know ourselves. You know the sins and rebellious patterns of our  lives. Though you have smiled on us with your grace, we have not always appreciated it and instead have  gone our own way. We have forsaken you to follow our own desires, and have gone places where we  knew you would not follow. Though we have often left you, you have not left us. You have reclaimed us  from the way of death, and restored us to your kingdom of life. Now, Lord, in the temptations that yet  lie in the future, yes even in this coming new year, abide with your grace and equip us to overcome them  all. Be our guide and stay throughout the new year that we may serve you better and more faithfully.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,

And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,

Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.

On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

P: Lord Jesus, one enemy remains to try to rob us of salvation and life. Yet, even this enemy you have  defeated for us. You have destroyed the terror of death and robbed it of its victory. In you and with you,  we can triumph over this “last enemy,” too. Abide with us then to the very end of our lives. Let your cross  shine through the gloom of that last hour so that we can see you waiting on the other side to lead us  home. When we open our eyes in heaven, then we will be free from all the trouble and danger of this  earthly existence. And so we pray: “In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;

Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness.

Where is death's sting?

Where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes,

Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies.

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!

BENEDICTION

 C: Amen.

HYMN 23 (1,2) “Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel”

FIRST LESSON: Titus 2:11-14

Christmas changes everything!  It inspires us to live in joy and holiness until Christ comes again.

11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

CHILDREN’S SONG: “Worship the King”

THE CHRISTMAS ACCOUNT- Luke 2:1-20

LUKE 2:1-5

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

HYMN 65 (1,2) “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

LUKE 2:6,7

6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

HYMN 67 (1,3) “What Child Is This”

LUKE 2:8-15

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

HYMN 61 (1,3) “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

LUKE 2:16-20

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Advent is a season of preparation, but also one of joy!

May the holy LORD God bless your worship and encourage you with his Word of promise.

WELCOME

HYMN 2 – please stand for last stanza

COMMON SERVICE - page 15

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Hear our prayers, Lord Jesus Christ, and come with the good news of your mighty deliverance.  Drive the darkness from our hearts and fill us with your light; for you live and reign with the  Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 61:1-3,10,11

It is an astonishing thing that so many are not satisfied with the salvation that God provides in the coming Christ, the Christ  proclaimed by faithful forerunners.

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim  good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for  the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s  favor and the day of vengeance of our God,to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those  who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called  oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor….10 I delight greatly  in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and  arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as  a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

PSALM 71, page 92

Blessed are they who hope, who hope in the Lord.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

The Christmas Spirit is the joy of holiness because of sin washed away. It is the joy of knowing that God is faithful and will  not leave us or forsake us no matter what happens to us in this life.

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for  you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophec-ies with  contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil. 23 May God  himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and  body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is  faithful, and he will do it.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.  Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL: John 1:6-8,19-28

John was God’s spokesman called to prepare the people for the Savior who comes in grace and in judgment.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to  testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light;  he came only as a witness to the light….19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish  leaders[c]in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to  confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 They asked him, “Then who are you?  Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 Finally they  said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say  about yourself?” 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling  in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” 24 Now the Pharisees who had been  sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor  the Prophet?” 26 “I baptize with[e] water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not  know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to  untie.” 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

HYMN 16 – please stand for last stanza

SERVICE OF THE WORD - page 38

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the way for your only Son. By his coming give us strength in our  conflicts and shed light on our path through the darkness of this world; through your Son, Jesus Christ our  Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  (Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 40:1-11

The message of God’s messengers has not changed. It is a message that prepares us for his coming both at Christmas and  on the Last Day.

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her  hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s  hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and  hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of  the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” 6 A  voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is  like the flowers of the field. 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our  God endures forever.” 9 You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good  news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of  Judah, “Here is your God!” 10 See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm.

See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He  gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

PSALM 85, page 97

I will hear what the LORD proclaims: peace to his people.

SECOND LESSON: 2 Peter 3:8-14

Don’t lose heart in the midst of all the distractions that the world offers to make us forget our chief business of being and getting ready for his coming.

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand  years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day  of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed  by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in  this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look  forward to the day of God and speed its coming.[b] That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens  by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward  to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking  forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple. Alleluia.  (Sing) Alleluia.....page 40

GOSPEL: Mark 1:1-8

Heed their call to repentance and trust in the Word and work of the coming Savior, no matter what His messenger looks  like.

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a]the Son of God, 2as it is written in Isaiah the  prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”—“a voice of one calling in  the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’’4 And so John the  Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The  whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were  baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around  his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And this was his message: “After me comes the one more  powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I baptize you  with[e] water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Christian Church Year

The Christian Church Year is divided into two parts. The first half is called the Festival Half. It is arranged according to the events of Christ’s life. The second half is called the Non-Festival Half. Although the Non-Festival Half has no special theme, it often focuses on the spiritual life of the believer in Christ. We pray that our service this morning will better help you understand the Christmas Church Year and its colors.

FESTIVAL HALF OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH YEAR

HYMN 23 (1,2) Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel

ADVENT (Coming) Blue / Purple Luke 1:26-38

26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to  a virgin pledged in marriage to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s  name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord  is with you. Blessed are you among women.” 29 But she was greatly troubled by the statement and was  wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,  because you have found favor with God. 31 Listen, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you  are to name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God  will give him the throne of his father David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his  kingdom will never end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel  answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow  you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Listen, Elizabeth, your relative, has  also conceived a son in her old age even though she was called barren, and this is her sixth  month. 37 For nothing will be impossible for God.” 38 Then Mary said, “See, I am the Lord’s servant.  May it happen to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.

HYMN 68 (1,3) Away in a Manger

CHRISTMAS (Birth) White Luke 2:1-20

1In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This  was the first census taken while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3And everyone went to register, each  to his own town. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the town of Nazareth, into Judea, to  the town of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was from the house and family line of  David. 5 He went to be registered with Mary, his wife, who was pledged to him in marriage and was  expecting a child. 6And so it was that while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7And  she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because  there was no room for them in the inn. 8 There were in the same country shepherds staying out in the  fields, keeping watch over their flock at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory  of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified! 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be  afraid. For behold, I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all people: 11 Today in the town  of David, a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord. 12And this will be a sign for you: You will  find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly, there was with the angel a  multitude from the heavenly army, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on  earth peace, good will toward mankind.” 15When the angels went away from them into heaven, the  shepherds said to one another, “Now let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened,  which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the  baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they told others the message they had  been told about this child. 18And all who heard it were amazed by what the shepherds said to  them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20And the shepherds  returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, which were just  as they had been told.

HYMN 83 (1,2) As With Gladness Men of Old

EPIPHANY (Appearing) White & Green Matthew 2:1-12

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, when Herod was king, Wise Men from the east came to  Jerusalem. They asked, 2“Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it  rose and have come to worship him.” 3When King Herod heard this, he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem  with him. 4 He gathered together all the people’s chief priests and experts in the law. He asked them  where the Christ was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, because this was written  through the prophet: 6 You, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are certainly not least among the rulers  of Judah: because out of you will come a ruler, who will shepherd my people, Israel.” 7 Then Herod  secretly summoned the Wise Men and found out from them exactly when the star had appeared. 8 He  sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you find him, report  to me, so that I may also go and worship him.” 9After listening to the king, they went on their way.  Then the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them, until it stood still over the place where  the child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with overwhelming joy. 11After they went into  the house and saw the child with Mary, his mother, they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they  opened their treasures and offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 Since they had been  warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route.

HYMN 104 (1,2) Go to Dark Gethsemane

LENT (Suffering & Death) Purple  Mark 15:1-15

1As soon as it was morning, the chief priests, along with the elders, the experts in the law, and the  whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to  Pilate. 2Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “It is as you say.” 3 The  chief priests accused him of many things. 4Pilate questioned him again, “Are you not going to answer  anything? See how many charges they are bringing against you!” 5 But Jesus still did not answer anything,  so Pilate was amazed. Barabbas or Jesus? 6At each Festival, Pilate used to release to the people one  prisoner whom they requested. 7 There was one named Barabbas, who was imprisoned with the rebels  and had committed murder in the rebellion. 8 The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for  them what he usually did. 9Pilate replied, “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?” 10 In  fact, he knew that it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed him over. 11 But the chief  priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead. 12Again, Pilate replied to  them, “Then what do you want me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 “Crucify him!”  they shouted back. 14 But Pilate said to them, “Why? What has he done wrong?” But they shouted  even louder, “Crucify him!” 15 Since he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them.  After he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.

HYMN 157 (1,2) Jesus Christ Is Risen Today

EASTER (Resurrection) White John 20:1-18

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb. She saw  that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2So she left and ran to Simon Peter and the other  disciple, the one Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she told them, “and we  don’t know where they put him!” 3So Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the  tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb  first. 5 Bending over, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter, who  was following him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there. 7 The cloth  that had been on Jesus’ head was not lying with the linen cloths, but was folded up in a separate place

by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, also entered. He saw and  believed. 9(They still did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.) 10 Then  the disciples went back to their homes. 11 But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, weeping. As she  wept, she bent over, looking into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels in white clothes sitting where the  body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They asked her, “Woman, why  are you weeping?” She told them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don’t know where  they have laid him.” 14After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she  did not know it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking  for?” Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you carried him off, tell me where you laid  him, and I will get him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and replied in  Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means, “Teacher”). 17 Jesus told her, “Do not continue to cling to me, for  I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my  Father and your Father—to my God and your God.” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the  disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” She also told them the things he said to her.

HYMN 171 (1,2) A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing

ASCENSION (Return to Heaven) White Luke 24:50-53

50 He led them out as far as the vicinity of Bethany. He lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51And  while he was blessing them, he parted from them and was taken up into heaven. 52 So they worshipped  him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 They were continually in the temple courts, praising  and blessing God. Amen.

HYMN 182 (1,3) Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling

PENTECOST (Sending the Holy Spirit) Red Acts 2:1-21

1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the  rushing of a violent wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were  sitting. 3 They saw divided tongues that were like fire resting on each one of them. 4 They were all filled  with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, since the Spirit was giving them the ability  to speak fluently. 5 Now there were godly Jewish men from every nation under heaven living in  Jerusalem. 6When this sound was heard, a crowd came together and was confused, because each one  heard them speaking in his own language. 7They were completely baffled and said to each  other,[a]“Look, are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears  them speaking in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia,  and of Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya  around Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes; 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them  declaring in our own languages the wonderful works of God.” 12 They were all amazed and perplexed.  They kept saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocked them and said, “They  are full of new wine.” 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and spoke loudly and  clearly to them: “Men of Judea, and all you residents of Jerusalem, understand this, and listen closely  to my words. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the  day.[b] 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 This is what God says will  happen in the last days: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will  prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants,  both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show  wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and a rising cloud of smoke.

20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and  glorious day of the Lord. 21And this will happen: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be  saved.

NON-FESTIVAL HALF OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH YEAR HYMN 195 (1,2) Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty

TRINITY SUNDAY White Isaiah 6:1-8

1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, and the train  of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two they  covered their faces. With two they covered their feet. With two they flew. 3 One called to another  and said, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!” 4 The foundations  of the thresholds shook at the voice of the one who called, and the temple was filled with smoke.  5 Then I said, “I am doomed! I am ruined, because I am a man with unclean lips, and I dwell among a  people with unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Armies!” 6 Then one  of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with  tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with the coal and said, “Look, this has touched your lips, so your guilt  is taken away, and your sin is forgiven.” 8 Then I heard the Lord’s voice, saying, “Whom shall I send?  Who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am. Send me!”

HYMN 394 (1,3) Blessed Are the Saints of God

SUNDAYS AFTER PENTECOST Green Matthew 5:14-16

14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 People do not light a lamp  and put it under a basket. No, they put it on a stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 In  the same way let your light shine in people’s presence, so that they may see your good works and  glorify your Father who is in heaven.

May Christ the Lord bless your worship.

WELCOME

HYMN 370 – please stand for last stanza

COMMON SERVICE - page 15

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Lord Jesus Christ, by your victory you have broken the power of the evil one. Fill our hearts with joy  and peace as we look with hope to that day when every creature in heaven and earth will acclaim you  King of kings and Lord of lords to your unending praise and glory; for you live and reign with the Father  and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Ezekiel 34:11-16,23,24

Since the time of David, Israel had called her kings “shepherds.” Rejoice in the Christ the King who shepherds his  flock day by day!

11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after  them. 12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my  sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and  darkness. 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring  them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the  settlements in the land. 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be  their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich  pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the  Sovereign LORD.16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and  strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice…. 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and  be their shepherd. 24 I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I  the LORD have spoken.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 15:20-28 If the story of Christ ended on Good Friday, there could be no joy at all. Rejoice in ChristtheKing who will conquer all our enemies!

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For  since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in  Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when  he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to  God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he  has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he “has put  everything under his feet.”[a] Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear  that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. 28When he has done this,  then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be  all in all.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Alleluia.  (Sing) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 27:27-31

Joyful? How can this reading make us rejoice? Rejoice in Christ the King who came as our sacrifice.

27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of  soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together  a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of  him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and  struck him on the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put  his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

OPENING HYMN 234

“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”  - please stand for last stanza

1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!

O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!

Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near,

Joining in glad adoration!

2 Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things is wondrously reigning

And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining.

Have you not seen All that is needful has been

Sent by his gracious ordaining?

3 Praise to the Lord, who has fearfully, wondrously, made you,

Health has bestowed and, when heedlessly falling, has stayed you. What need or grief Ever has failed of relief?

Wings of his mercy did shade you.

4 Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.

Ponder anew What the Almighty can do

As with his love he befriends you.

Please stand

5 Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!

All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!

Let the Amen Sound from his people again;

Gladly forever adore him!

HYMN OF WORSHIP 611 “For the Fruit of His Creation”

1 For the fruit of his creation, Thanks be to God.

For his gifts to ev’ry nation, Thanks be to God.

For the plowing, sowing, reaping,

Silent growth while we are sleeping,

Future needs in earth’s safekeeping, Thanks be to God.

2 In the just reward of labor, God’s will be done.

In the help we give our neighbor, God’s will be done.

In our worldwide task of caring

For the hungry and despairing,

In the harvests we are sharing, God’s will be done.

3 For the harvests of the Spirit, Thanks be to God.

For the good we all inherit, Thanks be to God.

For the wonders that astound us,

For the truths that still confound us,

Most of all that Love has found us, Thanks be to God.

THANKSGIVING PRAYER

M: In all things, O Lord, grant to us grace not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought, but to honor You above  all and to love our neighbors as ourselves. On our own we have nothing that will endure, but You have granted to us  all things in Christ and the life that does not end. Hear Your people for the sake of and in the name of our Lord,  Jesus Christ, with whom, in whom and through whom all honor and glory is Yours, almighty Father, with the Holy  Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

10 Then you will eat, and you will be filled, and you will praise the LORD your God for the good land that  he has given you. 11 Be very careful so that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his  commandments and ordinances and his statutes that I am commanding you today. 12 When you eat and are  satisfied, and you build nice houses and move into them, 13and your herds and your flocks multiply, and  your silver and gold increase, and everything that you have prospers, 14 watch out so that your heart does  not become arrogant and forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where  you were slaves. 15 Do not forget the LORD, who led you in the great and terrifying wilderness, where  there were venomous snakes and scorpions, where the thirsty ground had no water, but the LORD made  water come out of a flint rock for you. 16 Do not forget the LORD, who in the wilderness fed you manna,  which your fathers had not known before, to humble you and to test you so that it would be good for you  later on. 17 You might say in your heart, “My ability and the power of my hand have earned this wealth for  me.” 18 But then you are to remember that the LORD your God is the one who gives you the ability to produce wealth, to confirm his covenant that he promised to your fathers with an oath, as he does to this  day.

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND LESSON: Philippians 4:10-20

10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord now that you have revived your concern for me once again. Actually, you  were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I lack anything; in  fact, I have learned to be content in any circumstances in which I find myself. 12 I know what it is to live in  humble circumstances, and I know what it is to have more than enough. I have learned the secret of being  content in any and every situation, while being full or hungry, while having plenty or not enough. 13 I can do  all things through Christ, who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless, you did well by becoming partners with me  in my affliction. 15 You Philippians know that in the beginning of your experience with the gospel, when I left  Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you alone. 16 Even  while I was in Thessalonica, you sent help more than once for my needs. 17 Not that I am seeking a gift, but I  am seeking the fruit that adds to your account. 18 I have been paid in full, and I have more than enough. I am  fully supplied since I’ve received from Epaphroditus the things that came from you, a sweet-smelling  fragrance, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. 19 And my God will fully supply your every need, according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever!  Amen.

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: Luke 17:11-19

11 On another occasion, as Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he was passing along the border between  Samaria and Galilee. 12 When he entered a certain village, ten lepers met him. Standing at a distance, 13 they  called out loudly, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves  to the priests.” As they went away they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed,  turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice. 16 He fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, thanking him. And he was  a Samaritan. 17 Jesus responded, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Was no one found  to return and give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Get up and go your way.  Your faith has saved you.”

M: The Word of the Lord

C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

CONFESSION OF FAITH

The First Article of the Apostles’ Creed & Explanation

M: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. What does this mean? C: I believe that God created me and all that exists, and that he gave me my body and soul,  eyes, ears and all my members, my mind and all my abilities.

And I believe that God still preserves me by richly and daily providing clothing and shoes,  food and drink, property and home, spouse and children, land, cattle and all I own, and all  that I need to keep my body and life. God also preserves me by defending me against all  danger, guarding and protecting me from all evil.

All this God does only because he is my good and merciful Father in heaven, and not  because I have earned or deserve it. For all this I ought to thank and praise, to serve and  obey him. This is most certainly true.

HYMN OF REPSONSE 610 “Now Thank We All Our God”

1 Now thank we all our God With hearts and hands and voices,

Who wondrous things has done, In whom his world rejoices,

Who from our mother’s arms Has blessed us on our way

With countless gifts of love And still is ours today.

2 Oh, may this bounteous God Through all our life be near us,

With ever-joyful hearts And blessed peace to cheer us

And keep us in his grace And guide us when perplexed

And free us from all ills In this world and the next.

3 All praise and thanks to God The Father now be given,

The Son, and him who reigns With them in highest heaven,

The one eternal God, Whom earth and heav’n adore!

For thus it was, is now, And shall be evermore.

THANKSGIVING MESSAGE

Give Thanks – For What ?

Habakkuk 3:17-20

17 The fig tree may have no buds.

The vines may have no grapes.

The olive tree may fail to produce.

The fields may yield no food.

The sheep may be cut off from their flock,

and there may be no cattle in the barns,

18 but I will delight in the LORD

and rejoice in God who saves me.

19 The LORD God is my strength.

He will give me feet like a deer

and make me leap along the high hills.

Reflect your cre-a-tiv-ity.

M: For the privilege and responsibility of living in a land blessed with freedom, striving for justice, we give you thanks:

May we in turn this gift extend

To those whose bondage knows no end.

M: Throughout the year, many of our lives have been touched by gifts or healing or wholeness or nearness to you, O  Lord. For such a time we give you thanks:

When lives are touched by healing, Lord,

We see your hand and hear your Word.

For those called home and those restored,

We join to praise your name, O Lord.

M: And most especially, O Lord, we bring you thanks and praise for blessing our lives with the promise of your precious  Gospel. Make us faithful witnesses of your love, grace, and truth:

“Christ, by Heav’nly Host Adored”

1 Christ, by heav’nly hosts adored, Gracious, mighty, sov’reign Lord,

God of nations, King of kings, Head of all created things,

By the Church with joy confessed, God o’er all, forever blest—

Pleading, at your throne we stand: Save your people, bless our land.

O’er our wide and goodly land Crown the labors of each hand.

Let your kind protection be O’er our commerce on the sea.

Open, Lord, your bounteous hand; Bless your people, bless our land.

3 Give us rulers who will be Known for love and honesty;

Let the pow’rs that you ordained Be in righteousness maintained.

In the people’s hearts increase Love of piety and peace.

Thus united, we shall stand One wide, free, and happy land.

November 19, 2023 Saints Triumphant Lord, keep us watchful and hopeful for our eternal triumphant.

May the LORD, who gives eternal life, bless your worship.

WELCOME

HYMN 7 – please stand for last stanza

SERVICE OF THE WORD - page 38

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Almighty God and Savior, you have set the final day and hour when we shall be delivered  from this world of sin and death. Keep us ever watchful for the coming of your Son that  we may sit with him and all your holy ones at the marriage feast in heaven; through your  Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,  now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 52:1-6

“Awake!” the prophet cries and hear God’s promise of coming triumph that will give you strength to face  your present problems.

521 Awake, awake, Zion,

 clothe yourself with strength!

Put on your garments of splendor,

 Jerusalem, the holy city.

The uncircumcised and defiled

 will not enter you again.

2Shake off your dust;

 rise up, sit enthroned, Jerusalem.

Free yourself from the chains on your neck,

 Daughter Zion, now a captive.

3For this is what the LORD says:

“You were sold for nothing,

and without money you will be redeemed.”

4For this is what the Sovereign LORD says:

“At first my people went down to Egypt to live;

 lately, Assyria has oppressed them.

5“And now what do I have here?” declares the LORD.

“For my people have been taken away for nothing,

and those who rule them mock,[a]”

declares the LORD.

“And all day long

 my name is constantly blasphemed.

6 Therefore my people will know my name;

therefore in that day they will know

that it is I who foretold it.

 Yes, it is I.”

PSALM 84, page 96

Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Encourage each other with the hope of saints triumphant so that there is neither ignorance nor hopeless  grief, but rather faithful, expectant watching for the triumph we know is coming.

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in  death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we  believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus  those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we  who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede  those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a  loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the  dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught  up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with  the Lord for-ever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple.  Alleluia.

(Sing) Alleluia.....page 40

GOSPEL: Matthew 25:1-13

Jesus’ parable of the Ten Virgins calls for the waiting Church to be the watchful Church. Keep watch for  you do not know the day or the hour!

251“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and  went out to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The

foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones,  however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in  coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s  the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’7 Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their  lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going  out.’ 9‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to  those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 But while they were on their way to  buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the  wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they  said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12 But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Last Judgment Lord, keep us mindful of the Last Day. May the LORD, who will come to judge

the living and the dead, bless your worship.

WELCOME

HYMN 29 – please stand for last stanza.

SERVICE OF THE WORD - page 38

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that  we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and to the day of your  righteous judgment. Keep us steadfast in true and living faith and present us at last holy  and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and  reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

(Sing) Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Daniel 7:9,10

Daniel sees a vision of the Last Judgment that is filled with thrones and fire and books.

9 As I looked, thrones were set in place,

and the Ancient of Days took his seat.

His clothing was as white as snow;

the hair of his head was white like wool.

His throne was flaming with fire,

and its wheels were all ablaze.

10A river of fire was flowing,

 coming out from before him.

Thousands upon thousands attended him;

ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

The court was seated,

 and the books were opened.

PSALM 16, page 68

I will walk in the presence of the LORD, in the land of the living.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Being mindful of the judgment means living according to God’s Word, not according to what the world  says.

51 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for  you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While  people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor  pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are  not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of  the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So  then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7For those  who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we  belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope  of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive  salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake  or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build  each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

VERSE OF THE DAY:

Alleluia. Watch, therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. Alleluia.  (Sing) Alleluia.....page 40

GOSPEL: Matthew 25:31-46

The Son of Man will sit on his throne, and all the nations will be brought before him to be judged. In this  judgment, you are either a sheep or a goat—there is no third option.

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on  his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will  separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the  goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the King will  say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your  inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was  hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to  drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I  was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 Then the  righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty  and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in,  or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to

visit you? ’40 The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least  of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 Then he will say to those on his  left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil  and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you  gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed  clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after  me.’ 44 They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger  or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 He will reply, ‘Truly I  tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
